Dandadan is airing again, and it is still impossible to describe
Every season there is one show that people cannot stop clipping. Right now it is Dandadan - a series about aliens, ghosts, and two teenagers who argue constantly while the world tries to kill them.
If you have seen the clips and thought "what is this," here is the honest answer.
The basics
- Studio: Science SARU.
- Where to watch: Crunchyroll and Netflix in most regions, weekly.
- Season 1 is twelve episodes and essential viewing first.
What it actually is
Momo believes in ghosts. Okarun believes in aliens. They each try to prove the other wrong, and both turn out to be right. From there it becomes a monster-of-the-week action series with a romance underneath that the show is genuinely sincere about.
The pitch that lands with most people: it is very funny, very weird, and unexpectedly emotional about family and grief.
Why the new season keeps trending
- The animation. Science SARU treats every fight like a short film. This is the main reason clips travel.
- The soundtrack. The opening and insert songs are doing serious work.
- Pacing. It rarely spends two episodes on the same idea.
One fair warning
The early episodes contain some crude humour that catches new viewers off guard. It settles down considerably after the opening arc, and the show is far more heartfelt than the first twenty minutes suggest.
