Anime Watch Orders

Where to start every series. Curated viewing guides for the biggest, most confusing anime franchises.

    Dragon Ball

Two viable paths: the classic order (Dragon Ball → Z) or the streamlined modern order using Dragon Ball Z Kai, which cuts filler. Movies and Super come after.

    Moderate

    Fate Series

Fate is a sprawling visual-novel multiverse with multiple timelines and prequels. The recommended order below follows the chronology of the original Holy Grail War story for first-time viewers, prioritizing the ufotable adaptations.

    Complex

    Fullmetal Alchemist

Two animated series adapt the same manga but diverge dramatically. The 2003 series went its own way before the manga finished; Brotherhood (2009) is the faithful, complete adaptation. For most viewers, Brotherhood is the only watch order you need.

    Straightforward

    Ghost in the Shell

Ghost in the Shell exists in three separate continuities: the 1995 Mamoru Oshii films, the Stand Alone Complex TV series, and the Arise OVAs. Pick a continuity and stick to it; the films are the most acclaimed entry point.

    Moderate

    Gundam (Universal Century)

Gundam has many alternate continuities, but the Universal Century is the original and most beloved timeline. This order follows the main UC saga in chronological story order, which also matches release order well enough for new viewers.

    Complex

    Lupin III

Lupin III is largely episodic — almost every entry is a self-contained heist. New viewers can start almost anywhere. This is a curated essentials list, not a strict order.

    Straightforward

    Macross

Macross has decades of entries but is broken into mostly-standalone sub-series. The order below is chronological by in-story timeline, which also works well for new viewers.

    Complex

    Monogatari Series

Monogatari aired out of chronological order. Most fans recommend release order for first-timers — it preserves the mystery and character reveals the author intended. Chronological order is a fun rewatch.

    Moderate

    Neon Genesis Evangelion

Two parallel ways to experience Evangelion: the original 1995 TV series + End of Evangelion film, or the modern Rebuild of Evangelion film tetralogy. Watch both eventually — but pick one to start.

    Moderate

    Sword Art Online

Sword Art Online has a clear linear release order with a few side-stories and films. Watch in release order; the spinoff Gun Gale Online Alternative is the only entry that can be skipped.
