Sword Art Online's watch order is more straightforward than people think, but the Progressive movies and spin-offs add confusion. Here's the simple guide.

    The quick answer

Watch in release order: SAO Season 1 → SAO II → Ordinal Scale (movie) → SAO Alicization → SAO Alicization: War of Underworld → Progressive: Aria → Progressive: Scherzo

    The complete SAO watch order

    | Entry | Episodes | Notes |

    |-------|----------|-------|

    | SAO Season 1 (Aincrad + Fairy Dance) | 25 episodes | Start here. Aincrad arc is iconic. |

    | SAO Extra Edition | 1 episode (OVA) | Optional recap + new content. Skippable. |

    | SAO II (Phantom Bullet + Calibur + Mother's Rosario) | 24 episodes | GGO arc + emotional Mother's Rosario |

    | SAO: Ordinal Scale (movie) | 119 min | Canon movie. Watch before Alicization. |

    | SAO Alicization | 24 episodes | Best SAO arc for many fans |

    | SAO Alicization: War of Underworld | 23 episodes | The epic conclusion |

    | SAO Progressive: Aria of a Starless Night (movie) | 97 min | Retells Aincrad floor 1 in detail |

    | SAO Progressive: Scherzo of Deep Night (movie) | 101 min | Continues the Progressive retelling |

Where does SAO Alternative: GGO fit?

SAO Alternative: Gun Gale Online is a standalone spin-off with different characters. You can watch it anytime after SAO II since it's set in the same game world but follows a completely new protagonist (LLENN). It's surprisingly good — tighter pacing and less controversial than main SAO.

Do I need to watch SAO Progressive?

The Progressive movies retell the Aincrad arc in much greater detail, floor by floor. They're technically a reimagining of SAO Season 1's first arc with better animation and more character development for Asuna.

Watch Progressive if: You love the Aincrad concept and want a deeper dive. Watch them after finishing the main series so you can appreciate the differences.

    Where to watch SAO

    • Crunchyroll — All seasons + GGO Alternative
    • Netflix — Alicization in many regions
    • Hulu — Seasons 1–2 (US)

    Frequently asked questions

Is SAO still worth watching in 2026?

If you enjoy isekai, yes. SAO pioneered many tropes the genre now relies on. Alicization in particular is genuinely great anime that transcends SAO's more divisive early arcs.

    Why is SAO so controversial?

The Fairy Dance arc (Season 1, episodes 15–25) is widely considered the weakest part due to its handling of certain characters. Many fans recommend pushing through it because everything after improves significantly.

    Can I skip Fairy Dance?

You can, but you'll miss important character introductions. If you must, at least watch episodes 15, 22–25 for plot continuity.

    Is SAO Progressive a reboot?

Not exactly. It's a retelling of the Aincrad arc with much more detail, based on the Progressive light novel series. Think of it as a companion piece rather than a replacement.
